Born on the Cape Flats, Azeem Badroodien studied at both the University of Cape Town and the University of the Western Cape. In his doctoral dissertation completed in 2000, Azeem explored the discursive links between poverty, unemployment, racialisation, mental handicap and vocational education under apartheid. Azeem is currently a Chief Research Specialist at the Human Science Research Council (HSRC), a government funded research council in South Africa. The key focus of Azeem's present work is on the links between further education and training and the workplace, both at the empirical data level and within the underpinning theoretical discourse of education and work. Being a quasi-historian, Azeem is particularly interested in the extent to which historical perspectives and understandings of race, alongside notions like social inclusion/exclusion and identity/social issues, influence policy-making, institutional development and capacity-building in the domains of further education provision and the workplace.
