Christopher Saunders is a Professor of History in the Department of Historical Studies, University of Cape Town. He was educated at the Diocesan College, Cape Town, the University of Cape Town and Oxford University, where he was a student first at Balliol and then at St. Antony's College. He is the author of many books and articles on different aspects of South African history, from urban history to historiography. He has most recently collaborated with Rodney Davenport on a new edition of `South Africa. A Modern History'(Macmillan, 2000). He has become increasingly interested in the history of Namibia, and has done extensive research on the way in which Namibia moved towards independence from the mid 1970s to 1990.
