Peter Rachleff

Peter Rachleff is a professor of history at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he has taught since 1982. He was trained as a U.S. labor historian at the University of Pittsburgh, where he studied with David Montgomery and E.P. Thompson. He has published two books, BLACK LABOR IN RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, 1865-1890 (University of Illinois Press, 1989) and HARD-PRESSED IN THE HEARTLAND: THE HORMEL STRIKE AND THE FUTURE OF THE LABOR MOVEMENT (South End Press, 1993). A supporter of the anti-apartheid movement in the 1970s and 1980s, Rachleff has only recently begun to explore scholarly work on the South African labor movement. He has published an essay in SAFUNDI ("On the Ground with the South African Labor Movement") and one in the Canadian journal, LABOUR/LE TRAVAIL ("The Current Crisis of the South African Labor Movement"). He is currently developing a course which compares the role of race in the labor movements of the United States and South Africa.
