Surendra Bhana taught for 15 years at the University of Durban-Westville in South Africa from 1972 to 1987, and has been at the University of Kansas since 1988. His research interests are South African history with special reference to Indians, and the South Asian diaspora generally. He teaches courses South African and American history. His publications include Gandhi's Legacy: The Natal Indian Congress, 1894-1994 (1997), Indentured Indian Emigrants to Natal, 1860-1902: A Study Based on Ships' Lists (1991), Essays on Indentured Indians in Natal (1991), Setting Down Roots: Indian Migrants in South Africa, 1860-1911, with J. B. Brain (1990), A Documentary History of Indian South Africans, 1860-1982 with Bridglal Pachai (1984), and The United States and the Development of the Puerto Rican Status Question, 1936-1968 (1975).
Currently, he and Dr. Goolam H. Vahed of the University of Durban-Westville in South Africa and engaged in a research project nearing completion. It is entitled: The Making of A Social Reformer: Gandhi in South Africa.
